Heat guard Goran Dragic opens EuroBasket with 30-point performance to lead Slovenia to win

MIAMI — The start of Heat training camp is still weeks away, but don’t tell Goran Dragic that.

The 31-year-old Heat point guard already looks like he’s ready. Dragic has spent the offseason in Slovenia preparing for EuroBasket, and he started the tournament with an efficient 30-point performance to lead Slovenia to a 90-81 win over Poland on Thursday in Helsinki, Finland.

Dragic, who is the captain of the Slovenian national team, finished with a game-high and national team career-high 30 points on 12-of-23 shooting to go with four assists and three steals in 30 minutes in the EuroBasket opener. Up next for Slovenia is a game against Finland on Saturday in Helsinki.

Dragic’s teammate on the Slovenian national team Luka Doncic was not as productive, but still showed off his intriguing skill set. The 6-foot-7 Doncic, who is projected to be one of the top 2018 NBA draft prospects, finished with 11 points on 3-of-12 shooting to go with eight rebounds and six assists.

This year’s EuroBasket will mark the end of Dragic’s international playing career. He posted on social media in Slovenian last week that he will retire from international play after the tournament.

This is Dragic’s fifth appearance at EuroBasket. Playing with the Slovenian national team has been a big part of Dragic’s summer routine during his NBA career, as he repeatedly said playing in the EuroBasket qualifiers last summer helped him have a standout 2016-17 season with the Heat.

The Slovenian national team is guaranteed to play a minimum of five games in EuroBasket and could be playing up until Sept. 17 if it makes it to the final day of the tournament. The top four teams in each six-team opening-round group advance to the knockout rounds, and Slovenia is one of the group favorites along with France and Greece.

The Heat begin training camp on Sept. 26, with the regular-season opener set for Oct. 18 against the Magic in Orlando.
