Months after preseason social media back-and-forth, Hassan Whiteside and Joel Embiid meet again Friday

PHILADELPHIA — Even if Hassan Whiteside doesn’t want to admit it, his matchup with Philadelphia’s Joel Embiid on Friday is different than the rest.

That’s because things got personal between the two centers during a Heat-76ers preseason game on Oct. 13. The night began when Whiteside committed three fouls within the first three minutes of the contest, and Embiid gestured to the Heat bench to remove Whiteside from the game because Whiteside couldn’t guard him. MIAMI — The Heat lost their preseason finale 119-95 to the 76ers on Friday in Kansas City. But the real battle began after the game.

Heat center Hassan Whiteside and 76ers center Joel Embiid went to Twitter after the contest to exchange jabs, and the four Miami-Philadelphia matchups this season immediately became a lot more interesting. Erik Spoelstra: Heat would be ‘much different basketball team’ with healthy Justise Winslow, Josh McRoberts

ORLANDO — It’s been a painful week in the NBA.

This week’s NBA news included some injuries that will force a few big names to miss extended time. Toronto guard Kyle Lowry (wrist), Golden State forward Kevin Durant (knee) are expected to — at least — miss the bulk of the remaining regular-season games, and Philadelphia center Joel Embiid will miss the remainder of the season with a left knee injury.
