MILWAUKEE – Hassan Whiteside attended East Side High School in Newark, N.J., for one year, but it was memorable enough that the Heat’s center will have his number 32 retired on Thursday.

Whiteside will attend the ceremony, which will take place during halftime of East Side’s game against Montclair High School. The Heat travel to New York following tonight’s game at Milwaukee and are off Thursday before Friday’s game at Brooklyn.

Whiteside attended five high schools in addition to one year of prep school. He went to East Side for his junior year after moving in with his father in Newark.

At East Side, he averaged 18 points, 10 rebounds and 5.5 blocks a game.

Whiteside moved back with his mother in North Carolina in 2007 for his senior year of his high school. After a year playing in prep school he signed with Marshall.

Whiteside’s number will be hung alongside that of Randy Foye, who was the 2002 New Jersey Player of the Year while at East Side before signing with Villanova. Foye had an 11-year NBA career.

“I remember growing up when he came back to visit us, how special it was,” Whiteside said.
