MIAMI — Dion Waiters is starting to become a fan favorite in Miami.
That’s what happens when you average 19.0 points on 46.5 percent shooting and hit a few clutch threes during a 20-4 stretch. Oh, and Waiters’ unwavering confidence also helps attract fans his way.
Remember this quote from Waiters in January? “I would rather go 0-for-30 than 0-for-9 because if you go 0-for-9 that means you stopped shooting. That means you lost confidence.”
Add that standout quote to Waiters’ recent play and you have a fan favorite. Apparently it will also get somebody to write a song about you.
Recently a song was uploaded onto YouTube titled “Waiters’ Island” by VoiceOver Dan, which uses the “Gilligan’s Island” tune.
Here’s one of the best lines from the song: “While Waiters shoots his dagger threes at crunch time at his best, the others should get comfortable on possessions they can rest. No pass, no moves to make, just a bunch of step-back threes. Like LeBron but better, he’ll be your MVP.”
Has Waiters heard the song yet?
“Nah. I ain’t heard it,” Waiters said with a smile after Friday’s practice. “How does it sound?”
Waiters then laughed and said he was going to check out the song. But before he finished the interview, the impending free agent delivered another quote that will keep Heat fans on his side.
“I always tell people, you can’t really have a bad day in Miami,” he said. “If you do, you’re just a miserable person. You wake up and walk outside, it’s nice and you’re wearing flip flops, a t-shirt and shorts all day.”
