Heat guard Goran Dragic lost one of his best friend as a teammate when the Miami Heat waived Beno Udrih last week.

Dragic and Udrih both are from Slovenia and have been teammates on the national team as well as part of last season in Miami with Udrih serving as Dragic’s backup. Udrih was hoping to fill that role this season but was cut Saturday. He was picked up by the Detroit Pistons.

“We understand this is a business,” Dragic said. “A good friend went to a different team. He was a great, great teammate who helped the young guys. He gave us a lot of experience. We talk. He’s happy over there and I’m happy for him.”

Dragic describes Udrih as his closest friend in the NBA.

“We have a history together,” he said.

Dragic was happy that Udrih posted a heartfelt thank you to the Heat this week.

Udrih thanked the organization for the experience of allowing him to be part of the team and a “world class organization,” along with the fans who create “an amazing atmosphere” and for welcoming him to Miami. He said some of his greatest memories will be time he spent at the Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, where he’ll miss seeing the kids’ “smiling faces.”

Udrih also thanked Heat president Pat Riley and coach Erik Spoelstra.

Although Dragic said Udrih, 34, would probably rather have stayed in Miami, he believes he is a good fit for the Pistons. Detroit is Udrih’s seventh NBA team.

“Style wise maybe,” Dragic said. “We want to play a little bit faster and that’s not his strength. I feel he will do well in Detroit.”

Udrih played 15 minutes and scored five points and had two assists Wednesday in his Pistons debut, a season-opening loss at Toronto.
