A favorable schedule doesn’t mean anything for the Heat if they’re going to lose games like this.

They fell 102-100 against the Lakers late Wednesday, missing a big opportunity in the playoff race. A victory against Los Angeles, which was 15-59 going into the game, would have tied them with Atlanta for the No. 3 seed. Instead, Miami remains tied with Boston and Charlotte for fourth.

Here are the standings, via NBA.com:

That mess currently shakes out with Boston out front as the No. 4 seed by virtue of its 4-0 record vs. the other two teams in the tie. The Heat would be fifth because of the intra-division tie-breaker over Charlotte, putting Miami on course to face the Celtics in the first round of the playoffs.

The Heat have now lost six games to the bottom 10 teams in the league, including four at home.
