Why doesn’t Goran Dragic ever dunk?

Goran Dragic has done quite a bit since being traded to the Heat last February, averaging 14.5 points and 5.7 assists, but you might have noticed one thing he hasn’t done: dunk.

In 88 games he has yet to throw one down — he tried last week with comical results — and hasn’t done it since leaving Phoenix. Dragic is listed as 6-foot-3 and has dunked in public view recently (although there was also this), but routinely turns that option down even in obvious opportunities. He has 40 career dunks since coming to the NBA in 2008.

“I don’t care,” he said of his preference to lay it in. “It’s still two points. I need to be smart. I’m not the player who dunks a lot. I’ll stick with my game.”

He also said it unnecessarily fatigues him more than simply lofting the ball through the net.

“Maybe just mentally, I don’t know,” he said. “Maybe like two or three seasons ago I stopped dunking. I was dunking on fastbreaks, but now I’m a layup guy.”
